Dear Colleagues,
Today, on #WorldAllergyDay, the World Allergy Organization (WAO) calls on the global community to place equitable access to allergy care at the heart of health systems worldwide.
Allergic diseases affect hundreds of millions of people of all ages – from infancy to older adulthood – and their prevalence and severity continues to rise in almost every country and every region of the world. Despite remarkable advances in science, many patients still experience delayed diagnosis, limited access to allergy specialists, unequal availability of essential medicines, allergen immunotherapy, and innovative biologic therapies. Too often, where a person lives determines the care they receive.
This must change.
Equity means ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to receive timely diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, and long-term follow-up, regardless of geography, age, socioeconomic status, or healthcare system. Early recognition and appropriate management not only improve quality of life but also prevent disease progression, reduce emergency visits and hospitalizations, and lessen the economic burden on families and society.
Achieving this goal requires collaboration. Governments, healthcare professionals, patient organizations, scientific societies, industry, and international partners all have a role in building stronger allergy services, expanding specialist training, improving access to life-saving and disease-modifying treatments, and implementing evidence-based care.
On this World Allergy Day, WAO reaffirms its commitment to advancing education, research, advocacy, and global partnerships to ensure that no patient is left behind.
Allergy Care is Essential Care. Together, let us make equitable allergy care a reality – for everyone, everywhere.
